History of our Towns Family

These pages will represent the families of George Towns and his wife Sarah Towns (nee Walker). George arrived as a convict in 1837 from Suffolk, England. More information is available from the excellent book by Mike Dunphy (see Resources page).

More about the Towns Family

I am descended from George and Sarah's son Thomas Towns (called Tommy) born 13 Jun 1856 in the District of Campbelltown, Tas. Tommy lived most of his life in North Eastern Tasmania working as a labourer and a sawmiller. He spent about ten years that I know of in the Kilmore area of Victoria which is where he met and married Emily Mary Dunne (pictured above with her daughters)
Elsie and Annie (Towns sisters)

Tom and Emily were married 15 January 1878 in the RC Church at Kilmore. Some of their children (four sons William, George, Percy and Charles) were born there and the remainder, Annie, Irene (Elsie), Matthew and Harold were born in Tasmania between 1888 and 1895.

This photo of Annie and Elsie was taken in December 1970 at Vin & Margaret Blyths' at Northdown, Tas.
